Modifications that made the least difference: NA
Future modifications to help make your vehicle more competitive: Wheels and race tires, then maybe a sway bar and shocks. But if I got wheels and tires, IÕd have to get a trailer ($$).
Other current or past autocross vehicles: None. Never autocrossed before last season.
Best thing about autocrossing: 1) ItÕs a safe place to drive your Òdaily driverÓ car as hard as you dare -- you donÕt need an expensive special race car. 2) The people. Friendly, helpful people. 3) It can be a family acitivty. ItÕs something you can do together with your son.
Worst thing about autocrossing: When your own son beats your best time by a second and a half in your own car – on his second day autocrossing. And on his third day. And on his fourth day.
Best driving tips: Walk the course several times and: Look ahead. Look ahead. Look ahead. (Looking ahead may mean looking to the side.)
Best advice for a beginner: 1) Get a ride with an experienced autocrosser early on, and then ask them to ride with you. 2) Seat time – Participate in as many events as you can. 3) Start young. ItÕs easier to learn. YouÕll probably beat your old man by your second race.
My ideal car: MR2 is pretty close. A little more power would be nice (and a little more trunk space). IÕm also working on a 1972 Triumph GT6 with the Buick aluminum V8 motor that IÕm thinking of running in autocross, but at my rate of progress, that is at least a couple of years away.
Opinion of your current car for autocross use: I think the MR2 is an excellent car for Autocrossing. At least I donÕt seem to have approached its limits, because when other people drive it, they always seem to make better time than I do! Mitch drove it in the February event and got best time in the C5 class – on street tires.
Awards/Wins/Accomplishments: A third and second in Novice class last year.
